A Sublime Vernacular:
The Landscape Paintings of Levine Flexhaug

Curated by Nancy Tousley and Peter White

The exhibition traces Flexhaug’s career from his earliest paintings in the late 1930s to the 1960s. The bulk of the exhibition is comprised of the easel paintings he painted and sold across western Canada. In addition, the exhibition features a selection of the murals Flexhaug painted for commercial establishments and a version of the documentary feature Flexie! All the Same and All Different that has been edited for inclusion in the show.

Wednesday, November 25: Screening, Flexie! All the Same and All Different, Alberta College of Art, Stanford Parrot Lecture Theatre, 12 p.m.

Wednesday, November 18: Panel discussion, Alberta College of Art, Stanford Parrot Lecture Theatre, 6 p.m.

Exhibition co-curator Nancy Tousley is joined on the panel by artist and Flexhaug collector Richard Gorenko, Ben Fullalove, who teaches at ACAD. Moderated by curator and critic Diana Sherlock.

Tuesday, November 17: Screening, Flexie! All the Same and All Different, Plaza Theatre, Calgary, 7 p.m.

Thursday, October 29: Exhibition opening, Illingworth Kerr Gallery, Alberta College of Art, Calgary, 5 to 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 23: Exhibition opening events at the MacKenzie Art Gallery.

The opening events include a panel discussion, a reception, and the premiere of the documentary Flexie! All the Same and All Different. Exhibition curators Nancy Tousley and Peter White are joined on the panel by Regina artist David Thauberger and the filmmakers who made the documentary, Gary Burns and Donna Brunsdale. The panel is moderated by University of British Columbia art historian John O’Brian.
